Dividing Line

It's funny to think that only a week ago or so ago we were getting drenched in sweat, now it's drenched in rain - got to love the British weather!

Despite what the elements have been throwing at us we've continued to grow and only two months after our last recruitment drive we're on the look out again for someone else to join our team.  If you know of anyone who might be interested, please ask them to get in touch.

All the best

Tip of the Month

What to do about Draught Marks

Draught marks are a common thing that we’re called out for and although in most instances they can be cleaned, unless the causes are addressed, they will almost certainly return.

Also known as filtration soiling, draught marks are caused when air blows through or across the carpet with the fibres acting as a filter, removing the dirt and dust from the air.  It’s most prevalent in older properties and can stem from:

  • Gaps between the floorboards
  • Gaps under the skirting boards
  • Gaps under the doors
  • Holes in the carpet

The dirt can be extremely fine and also very oily, which forms a tight bond to the fibres meaning that even regular vacuuming will not be a suitable solution.  Specialist cleaning solutions can be used to remove the dirt, but it is worth noting that in some instances oxides of nitrogen and sulphur can settle, which react with moisture to form mild acids that can cause permanent discolouration.

Regular carpet cleaning will maintain a healthy carpet, but to properly tackle the causes of draught marks you may want to consider one of the following options in order to prevent the continued flow of air:

  • Laying building paper over the floorboards and relaying the carpet
  • Laying sheets of hardboard onto the floorboards and taping all joints
  • Sealing the gaps between the floorboards with a product such as DraughtEx
  • Sealing the gaps beneath the skirting boards with a flexible mastic
  • Adding draught excluders to the bottom of your doors

Many of these options you can carry out yourself, but if unsure, always contact a professional carpet fitter and/or carpenter.
